Remark! Community CELEBRATED OUR 10TH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR!
The early days
Wow, it’s Remark! Community’s 10th birthday!
Remark! Community was set up in 2010 and these last 10 years have flown by.
Remark! Community have had lots of fantastic achievements. The number of staff has expanded as now we provide many services.
Jonny had 10 years’ experience working for three different Deaf charities. The problem was fundraising, as a percentage of all the funding we received had to be spent on ‘Core costs’ for example, creating policies, HR, finance, management, electricity bills and desk space. This meant all the money ran out quickly and there was not much left for the actual service. Lots of funders were happy to provide funds for the service but not for the ‘Core costs’. This meant all three charities he worked for struggled with financial problems.
Then he was made redundant as charities had to make budget cuts. He thought that this funding ‘model’ was not right, and thought about how he could solve the problem.
At that time Remark! Media was a big success and the business was soaring. Jonny approached Mark Nelson and asked him how Remark! provide support as Remark! themselves had already been supporting the Deaf community here and there. Jonny asked if Mark could support him in setting up his own Deaf charity. Mark agreed so Jonny set up Remark! Community in 2010. This meant that the money we received from funders could go directly to the Deaf community through funding our projects. Remark! would cover all the ‘Core costs’ so all the money we received went straight to the Deaf charity. So this great idea has been successful. Jonny would like to say a big thank you for the last 10 years; thank you to the staff, volunteers, and the clients involved in Remark! Community. Happy Birthday!
