city bridge trust via London Community Response
The global pandemic has had a huge impact on everyone, but in particular on the Deaf community. We unfortunately had to close all of our social community clubs, which for many, this was their only social outlet. This involves having to close all four of our Lunch Clubs for the older members, our Youth Club, our Remarkable! Club and our sports projects.
Our team of staff and volunteers are continuing to support our members as best we can, which includes remote video chats to prevent isolation, dropping off shopping for those at highest risk and
providing online entertainment to keep spirits high through this difficult time for us all. A lot of the resources online are not accessible to our members and we need to convey the information from English to British Sign
language.
We were therefore extremely grateful when we were successful in our application for a grant from the London Community Response Fund, funded by the City Bridge Trust.
The London Community Response was launched only four days after the start of lock down, and has now awarded over £11m in total to support the capital’s community and voluntary organisations during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Remark! Community used their grant to provide technology such as tablets to those are isolated at home with no means of communication with the outside world. One member said “Since I received the tablet, I am feeling so much better; I used to feel depressed and unmotivated but now this is something that keeps me going.”
The grant also helps us to keep our Sign Club and Youth club running efficiently every week, enabling us to support even more people who need us!
