Indonesia Documentary screening brings the house down!

A documentary on Herbert’s mission to improve Mental Health in Indonesia

Last night a packed crowd enjoyed the screening of Herbert’s mission in Indonesia to improve Deaf people’s mental health. Head of Remark! Community, Annie O’Shea played the role of host for the evening to an enormous crowd. The audience was engaged throughout as Herbert shared some remarkable stories from his 6-month mission in Indonesia.

Big cheer from the Deaf Community

“I have delivered 32 workshops to over 523 Deaf people to increase their knowledge of mental health issues and discover ways to overcome them.  My mission was to empower and provide tools to as many Deaf people as possible so they can pass on the skills and awareness of mental health issues.  With one of the largest Deaf communities in the world, 4 million of them, it was not going to be easy.”
HERBERT KLEIN

Herbert Klein is passionate about Deaf people and their mental health. He has worked tirelessly over the last 20 years in the UK to support this cause.  For the last 6 months his work has continued, but in Indonesia.
The documentary follows the main 6 stories from his travels.

passionate about Deaf people and their mental health

The audience were treated to truly powerful stories and discovered what life is really like in a Deaf village. Herbert discovered what a tough reality it is for Deaf people; improvised working conditions, disease, and extreme poverty to name but a few. One woman, a Deaf teacher, told of her struggles and the challenges she faced to get what she has achieved, including huge resistance from her own parents.

stories of Deaf people, how they survived

Indonesia has seen many natural disasters and we hear the stories of Deaf people, how they survived and how they are dealing things after the events regarding their mental health.  Some people had their lives turned upside down by the tsunami which literally swallowed everything they had; their home, their entire family, everything they knew.

Remark! Is proud to support this vital work of Herbert Klein, as we share the belief that empowering Deaf people is the way forward. In comparison to hearing people, Deaf people’s mental health is disproportionately affected, therefore the education and knowledge that Herbert is providing is vital to their wellbeing and quality of life”
ANNIE O’SHEA

The packed house stayed late into the evening discussing what they had seen. Herbert answered a barrage of questions in a Q&A session after the screening. The whole event helped to raise a total of £1,100 which will fund both community projects and the continuation of Herbert’s vital work. We wish him luck as he plans to return to his mission in May.
