Saturday Club Hits the Mark: Remarkable Archery Fun!
This January our Saturday Club members were thrilled for the opportunity to go to a private group archery session with Experience Archery. Joined by a few new members, and many familiar faces, we travelled from our homely base on Leather Lane to Archway, where we convened at the archery venue.
The session was led by the experienced archer Lee, and 3 of his coaching colleagues. He took the group through the safety set-up, using gestures to communicate to the group when to begin and when arrows were safe to collect. We were impressed by the extra thought he'd given to Deaf accessibility - an emergency stop, usually signified by a shout, was replaced by the signal of throwing a light-up bouncy ball into the archery area!
Lee then demonstrated his skilled archery technique to the group, walking everything through each step with visuals and simple instructions: feet facing the wall, bow gripped, arrows nocked (odd colour facing inward!), and fingers at the ready... finally, the team were ready to SHOOT!
Some arrows flew into walls, some bounced off target legs, and the lucky few found their way to the bullseye! Time for round 2! No arrows in walls this time, some glanced unluckily off the target, and many more hit that bullseye! Round 3 came, and finally it was bullseyes galore!
We rounded off the day with a plucky game of 'Balloon Assassin', the aim of which was to burst as many balloons as possible on the targets with accurate sharp-shooting! And after an afternoon of practise and much improvement, those balloons didn't stand a chance...
